The state, which has spent more than $1 billion building a new downtown Cal State Los Angeles campus, gave the athletics department a lump sum of $25 million when it signed the deal.
The newspaper investigation, however, found that the cash wasn’t spent on the new North campus but on the construction of a 12,500-seat football stadium.
The university signed a 10-year lease for the stadium in July that guarantees $1.5 million annually for 10 years for construction. Cal State officials said the deal will benefit the school by allowing the construction of a new, larger North campus that will meet accreditation requirements in 2008.
In response to the newspaper report, Cal State officials on Friday defended the agreement with the Raiders as necessary to help the school meet accreditation requirements and to save the team, which was at risk of being moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Carson.
“The agreement is solid and was done right and in accordance with state law,” university spokeswoman Lynn Moore said.
The agreement, which was signed in July, calls for the university to build a football stadium at the site of the 20,000-seat Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which the team plays in now. The stadium is to be completed by 2011.
